“Operation False Charity” targets 32 fundraising companies,
22 nonprofits or “purported nonprofits,” and 31 individuals
The Federal Trade Commission and law enforcement officials from 49 states and the District of Columbia have filed 76 law enforcement actions against 32 fundraising companies, 22 nonprofits or “purported nonprofits” and 31 individuals for allegedly deceptive charitable fundraising practices.
“Operation False Charity” focuses primarily on telemarketers who allegedly make false representations about the use of contributions by organizations supposed to support police, firefighters, and veterans. In some cases, the authorities charge that the funds go to “sham charities” established primarily to generate income for the fundraisers.
