Managing the Risk Of Board Discontent
British critic and social theorist John Ruskin wrote, "In order that people may be happy in their work, these three things are needed: They must be fit for it; they must not do too much of it, and they must have a sense of success in it."
This formula is applicable to the board of your nonprofit. A disruptive, unhappy board means wasted resources, mounting stress on the staff of the organization, and the possibility of an unnecessarily short tenure by the executive director. Every nonprofit CEO wants to support a happy, engaged board while avoiding the negativity that too often rears its ugly head in the boardroom.
